Welcome to Hawaii Montessori School in Kamuela

HMS has served the Waimea community for over 25 years.

Our school was started by a group of parents who were searching for an educational program that would meet their goals of child-centered teaching and learning. High academic standards were also a priority. Over the years we have grown from that first small Primary class (3-6 year olds) and now our school has a Toddler Program, two Primary classes, and an Upper and Lower Elementary class. Current enrollment is 85.

HMS is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an independent 501(3)c not-for-profit organization. As an independent school, we create our own programs and operate without the financial support of state or federal funds. We are also not subsidized by any religious organizations. HMS is run by a Board of Directors and is independent from any local school boards. We rely on financial support from tuition income, grants, fundraising, and our Annual Fund.

Recycle your Inkjet Cartridges!

HMS is very active in promoting evironment awareness. One way is recycling everything we can. Our school is an official acceptance location for used inkjet cartridges and cell phones. Please – collect used inkjet cartridges and old cell phones and bring them by the school.

We accept cartridges from HP, Lexmark, Canon, Dell and Sharp.
Unfortunately, we cannot recycle Epson cartridges at this time.

Here’s what you’ll find in a Montessori school

In a Montessori class, children engage in interactive learning in an environment carefully prepared by an educator trained to work with children of specific age groups.

In non-graded classes of mixed ages, children are given lessons by the teacher. They are then able make discoveries about language, mathematics, geography, geometry, art and music.

The highly social atmosphere of this environment stems from a unique combination of freedom and structure founded on respect. A Montessori education fosters the fullest development of a child’s potential and provides a foundation for a life of joyful and successful learning.
